---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Eagles' Neely named GL MVPThis story appeared in the Antelope Valley Press on Wednesday, November 22, 2006. By SEAN LYNCH Roxy Neely planted the seeds of an MVP-caliber season with her performance in the Lancaster High School volleyball team's Golden League opener against defending champion Quartz Hill. The senior proceeded to cement her lock on the honor by leading the Eagles to their first-ever Golden League title and a first-round playoff victory. Neely's inspired season was rewarded on Tuesday when the All-Golden League team was announced, with the Lancaster setter being named player of the year. "I think Roxy was very deserving of the honor and it was nice to see her recognized for that," Eagles coach Dave Gutierrez said. Neely was one of four players from league champion Lancaster to earn all-league honors, along with Sefrina Starks, Ashley Robinson and Heather Black. When Neely became the Eagles' full-time setter, Starks moved to outside hitter and flourished, leading the team in kills the rest of the season. Robinson offered Lancaster solid, consistent production at middle blocker and Black became an intricate part of the team's rotation, offering an offensive spark off of the bench. "I'm very pleased with how things worked out," Gutierrez said. "It was nice to see a young player like Sefrina get recognized and Heather and Ashley were equally deserving." Loaded with a bevy of offensive weapons, league runner-up Quartz Hill earned the second most all-leaguers with three. Outside hitter Chelsea Hamilton established herself as one of the league's biggest hitters, while Kahli Remy proved to be the perfect complement to Hamilton on the other side. Stefanie Sveiven made a successful switch from middle blocker to opposite hitter, helping to solidify Quartz Hill's playoff push. "Getting three kids on the all-league team is pretty good," Rebels coach Blake Stanford said. "All three of them hit the ball well and had good numbers." Third- and fourth-place Littlerock and Highland each earned a pair of all-leaguers with their setters and top outside hitters. Brittany Sousa and Nicole Castrellon represented the Lobos, while Nicole Moore and Renee Murguia were named for the Bulldogs. The all-league team was rounded out by Palmdale's Daniella Robinson, Knight's Jessica Thomas and Antelope Valley's Victorya Conedy. "I think the voting was fair and accurate," Gutierrez said. "I think the league's best was definitely represented." |
