Antelope Valley Girl's
AVC volleyball team looks strongThis story appeared in the Antelope Valley Press on Thursday, August 30, 2007.By GREG WAGNER Ready to start her season officially, Antelope Valley College volleyball coach Jane Cwayna was pleased with her team's final scrimmage tournament. A few days after the Marauders went 2-6 during a tournament in San Luis Obispo, AVC hosted a scrimmage on Wednesday and went 5-3 against Canyons, Taft, Moorpark and San Diego City. "I have a pretty good feeling about the team," said Cwayna, who will run a 6-2 offense. Sophomore outside hitter Shaunna Garcia had the most kills during AVC's eight games, compiling 24 along with 23 digs and four aces. The most aces, though, went to sophomore Katrina Valenica, who had 13 as well as 14 kills, 18 digs and 42 assists. Valencia is the team's starting setter. With nine players on its roster, those two veterans are the pair AVC will look to this season. "They are the go-to players," Cwayna said. "They've done well." Middle blocker Julia Harrison added 12 kills, five blocks and two aces while freshman Lyn Buena had 25 digs and six aces. AVC swept San Diego City and split with Canyons, Taft and Moorpark. The Marauders open their season at home against Glendale at 5 p.m., part of three straight games at the AVC Gym. They will play in one regular season tournament this year, the Santa Ana Tournament on Sept. 15. AVC's Foothill Conference opener is at Chaffey on Sept. 28 and the Marauders finish the year with a home game on Nov. 9 against Rio Hondo and a visit to Victor Valley on Nov. 14. Five returning sophomores make up the backbone of the Marauders lineup, but Cwayna said whoever deserves the playing time and starting roles will get them. "If they work hard they're going to play," she said. "They're going to earn it at practice." |
