MOJAVE - The Mojave volleyball team couldn't capitalize on the effort of Ashley Marroquin, losing a High Desert League match in four games to Kern Valley, 25-18, 19-25, 25-22, 25-15, Thursday night at Mojave High School.
With 12 kills, 10 assist, 3 aces and 22 digs, Marroquin gave a winning effort, but - except for Sharayah McAdams' eight aces that kept Mojave treading in thick water - her supporting cast was hard to find.
"Once they saw her (Marroquin) get blocked a few times," commented Coach Shane Moore "it seemed like the girls got a little intimidated."
Intimidation was one of the mistakes that coach Moore attributed to their loss. Along with 14 service errors and 24 hitting errors, Mojave's wavering confidence is merely another minor lapse in this loss that the coach plans to correct
Falling to 4-1, Mojave faces a league opponent on Monday when they serve against Desert, giving them an opportunity to showcase their much needed improvements.
Quartz Hill 3, Knight 0
QUARTZ HILL - In a 3-0 victory (25-8, 25-12, 25-18), Rebels Kara Sherrard and Kahli Remy both racked up 10 kills.
Teammate Khaliah Burnley had six kills and six blocks.
"We played really consistent tonight and everyone played really well," Quartz Hill coach Larry Vocke said.
Highland 3, Eastside 0
LANCASTER - Despite Eastside's Shayna Wright making six kills, two blocks, and one ace, Eastside could not pull out a win against the Bulldogs (7-6, 5-3).
"This is definitely the best game we've played yet," Lions assistant coach Ashley Vandiver said.
Desert 3, Rosamond 0
EDWARDS AFB - Desert found success on the palms of all their team members with Julie Baker throwing down 11 kills, Brianna Lawrence and Kellie Stutz equally slamming seven kills and Lindsey Lewis serving up 23 assist.
"The girls played very well because we capitalized on some things we worked on in practice earlier this week," noted coach Debbie Lewis.
With an improved record (4-1, 9-4), and one game behind schedule due to a brown-out cancellation, Desert looks forward to blowing through Mojave in its early game on Monday.
Lucerne Valley 3, Boron 0
LUCERNE VALLEY - The Bobcats lacked a competitive spirit against Lucerne Valley, according to coach Tabitha Wiser.
Makenna Evans had four kills and Alex Kometas had three kills for Boron.
