Starks to Libero - A Natural

Like a good mystery, volleyball careers don't always go the way one would
expect. Seferina Starks may be the latest example of that phenomenon.
Starks has grown up playing volleyball in the the Antelope Valley. Her older
sister was a Lancaster High School hitter. Starks played on various
club teams and with former Golden League MVP Roxanne Neely. Starks
was an all-league 1st team selection as a sophomore for Lancaster HS
during last year's championship season when Neely was league MVP.
Starks, a junior, and Neely, Frosh - CSU-EB, share other common attributes.
Both started out as setters. Both are capable hitters, passers, and diggers.
Somewhere along the line each was identified as an outstanding libero prospect.
Neely prepared to go to UNLV as a setter but became Coach Allison
Keeley's candidate to replace former Palmdale libero great, Jada Walker.
Walker is having a record setting senior year at NCAA Division I
UNLV (#28/11-2). Neely opted to remain a setter and is sharing the duties
in a 6-2 offense at NCAA Division III - Cal State University - East Bay
(Hayward)(#14/16-2).
Lancaster HS girl's Volleyball coach David Gutierrez recently
moved Starks to libero with winning results against Knight.
Anyone who has reviewed video of Starks playing in the back row for LnHS
or the AVVC club team has to come away impressed with the formidable
ball tracking ability of this player. Starks may, like Jada Walker at UNLV,
turn out to be one of the most productive players to ever represent the
Antelope Valley in the NCAA - as a libero.
Big changes to lineup pay off for Eagles' volleyball
This story appeared in the Antelope Valley Press on Friday, September 28, 2007.

LANCASTER - With the recent loss to Littlerock on Tuesday, Lancaster girls volleyball coach Dave Gutierrez made some drastic changes to his lineup in an attempt to shake things up on Thursday against Knight.
"We did a lot better," Gutierrez said. "We made some major changes to our lineup."
The moves paid off as Lancaster scored the 3-0 (25-13, 25-17, 25-18) win.
Former outside hitter Seferina Starks was moved to libero and racked up 11 digs for the Eagles. Middle blocker Ashley Robinson and outside hitter Alectra Edison led the offense with 10 kills and nine kills respectively.
"She (Starks) was very convincing tonight," Gutierrez said. "She did a great job."
Heather Black and Mariah Lewis will be competing for the other outside hitting job for Lancaster, who will face another test when it plays at Highland on Tuesday.
