EDWARDS AFB - The Scorpions girls volleyball team has a streak of pink that runs down the sides of their uniform to remind them they are lady athletes. The streak is small to ensure they do not forget that athletes is the key component of that phrase.

That athleticism was never in doubt as Desert High School easily defeated Mojave on Thursday, needing the minimum three games to dispatch a Mustangs (4-12, 1-9 High Desert League) team that is coping with inexperience.

"We've been mistake prone all year," Mojave coach Shane Moore said. "We have struggled receiving the serve all year and we did both those tonight."

Desert (14-7, 7-3) has had a torturous schedule that had the Scorpions traveling to Mojave, Bishop and Kern Valley.

"These guys were tired," Desert coach Debbie Lewis said. "I didn't know what I would get out here tonight."

What she got was a coordinated effort, crisp passing, and near perfect form.

The Scorpions were in control for most of the game using their height and experience to their advantage.

After winning the first two games 25-20 and 25-17, the Scorpions opened the third game a little flat and fell behind early.

"I think when we start to get a lead, we kind of relax and we can never do that," said Bri Lawrence, who had 10 kills. "I think we did a little of that tonight."

Desert recovered and won 25-19.

The Scorpions will finish in second place this season, meaning that they missed one their pre-season goal of winning their league. Their other - and more important - goal of winning a playoff game is still within reach. The Scorpions will have to wait until Sunday night find out who they will play in the first round.
