PALMDALE - What makes volleyball so different from the other major sports is even when you lose a game, your chance to redeem yourself comes quickly and with a clean slate.
This was no more evident than Tuesday night as Lancaster dropped Game 1 at Highland, but rallied to win three-straight games to win 3-1.
Alectra Edison hit three kills in a row in Game 4, propelling the Eagles to the match-clinching victory. Edison recorded 11 kills on the night, while teammate Ashley Robinson had 12 of her own.
While Edison gets most of the accolades from the outside looking in, Lancaster head coach Dave Gutierrez is quick to credit the team's setter Ariane Labrzycki as a big reason for Tuesday's turnaround.
"The difference between Game 1 and the rest of the night was our setter was struggling in Game 1, but she pulled it together for the rest of the games," Gutierrez said. "She fixed some of her errors and that was a big change for us. Also their serving was outstanding in Game 1. Luckily, they didn't serve quite as tough the rest of the match."
Highland took Game 1, as Lancaster players failed to land many of their shots in bounds. At one point they hit three consecutive shots outside the lines and Highland took a 17-11 lead.
Stephanie Arrieta of the Bulldogs hit a spike putting Highland ahead 19-13. As Lancaster continued to struggle with their shot accuracy, Highland went on to win the first game 25-17.
The Eagles got their act together from that point though, as they topped Highland in a hard-fought Game 2, 25-19.
In Game 3, Highland jumped out to an early 4-0 lead, but Lancaster's Robinson got it going with two-straight kills to make the score 4-2.
Heather Black pitched in with her best game of the match, as her spike put the Eagles ahead 22-13, before Robinson sealed the game 25-15 with another spike.
The action got tense in Game 4 with Highland leading for most of it. A shot from Robinson gave Lancaster their first lead of the game 15-14.
From there, setter Labrzycki continued to find Edison time and time again for spike attempts she kept connecting on. The Eagles went on to finish the match with a 25-22 win.
"Electra has the power where against no block, she's going to win a good percentage of the time. It's nice to be able to do that."
Highland will now travel to Quartz Hill to face the Rebels Oct. 9, while Lancaster will host Antelope Valley Thursday with a lot to improve upon, according to coach Gutierrez.
"We're still working to serve the ball as well as we'd like. And we're still trying to get our young setter experience. The more she plays, the better she gets. She's one of the best young setters in the league. As she matures every game, we're going to get better and better."
