The Desert High School volleyball team lost a tough, hard-fought match in five games to Lucerne Valley 18-25, 25-23, 23-25, 25-17, 10-15.
While the contest was decided by a well-played fifth game, the Scorpions best chance to take control came in the third game, where they lost an 11-1 lead and dropped the game 25-23.
"Its something that we've done the past few games," senior Brianna Lawrence said. "When we get ahead we relax, and it gives the other team a chance to get in it.
"I really wanted to go farther, but I'm happy with our team. We played awsome this year and I couldn't ask for a better team.
"We just made some mistakes," Desert coach Debbie Lewis said. "You don't win if you make mistakes, and we made too many mistakes in the last game.
"We had a couple injured players who gave their heart and soul, but unfortunately we were on the short end."
After Desert raced out to the big lead, Lucerne Valley rallied to cut the deficit to 12-8 after a kill by Deborah Gonzalez.
After Lucerne Valley tied the game at 19, a Lawrence kill put the Scorpions ahead 20-19. But another Campbell kill made the score even again and Kayla Graham's kill won it for Lucerne Valley 23-25.
The two evenly-matched teams split the first two games, before Desert's heartbreaking loss in the third.
The fourth game was dominated by the Scorpions, as they raced out to a 7-2 lead. A touch shot by Brittany Snyder put them ahead 10-4, and later, a Kellie Stutz ace followed by a Julie Baker kill made the score 17-7.
Stutz, who had 23 digs and seven kills, rolled her ankle the Wednesday night near the end of practice and received treatment right up until game time Thursday.
"She's probably dying right now but she played really hard," Lewis said after the game.
Lawrence had 14 kills and 11 blocks and Lindsey Lewis had 35 assists, three aces and two kills as the Scorpions combined for 49 kills as a team.
A Lawrence block made the score 24-17, and they went on to win and force the fifth game.
Lucerne Valley began the deciding game on fire, jumping out to a 6-0 advantage.
Desert cut the score to 12-8 with a Stutz kill, but the Mustangs' Gonzalez eventually ended the match and the Scorpion's season with a kill.
"We fought so hard tonight, and in game 5 the other team just stepped up," Lawrence said. "I guess they took us by surprise, but we just didn't play our game like we should have."
Despite the loss, Lewis was able to reflect on the season.
"We had a lot of fun together and they worked really hard. There wasn't one day where they didn't come ready to work."
