If Quartz Hill is going to make the Southern Section Division III-AA semifinals this year, the Rebels will have to go through top-ranked Oaks Christian to do so.
In the girls volleyball pairings, which were released Sunday, Quartz Hill (vs. Rancho Alamitos) was the only Golden League team awarded a first-round home game. Lancaster (at Warren) and Littlerock (at Ontario) will travel on Tuesday.
Should the Rebels, who are the No. 8 seed, win Tuesday, they'll play the winner of Victor Valley and defending III-AA champ Valencia of Placentia on Thursday.
"I'm surprised that we didn't move up from eighth," Quartz Hill coach Larry Vocke said. "But, when you're not one of the big schools, you don't expect to get a great seed."
As the fourth team out of the GL, Palmdale will play at Barstow in the wild-card round today. If the Falcons win, they play at Oaks Christian Tuesday.
"I thought we would go straight to a No. 1 team on Tuesday," first-year Palmdale coach Jarrod Cline said.
The Falcons swept Highland this season, paving the way to a playoff appearance after Cline took over coaching just a few weeks before the season started.
"The girls have come together when they needed to," Cline said. "The teams above us belong there, but I think we're a good team."
For Lancaster coach Dave Gutierrez, the draw was confusing.
As the second team from the Golden League, the Eagles were done no favors. Lancaster must play at last year's runner-up Warren on Tuesday and then, with a win, the Eagles get No. 2 seed Santa Ynez on Thursday.
"I've been doing this for a long time," Gutierrez said. "I used to try and figure out what they were doing, but I've stopped.
"We're just going to play our best game. Obviously, it'd be nice to get a respectable seed, but we're going to have to play a top team in the second round."
In Division IV-A, High Desert League runner-up Desert will host St. Mary's Academy out of the Santa Cruz League on Tuesday. The winner of that game plays at Desert Mountain League champ Lucerne Valley (first-round bye) on Thursday.
As the third-place team from the Alpha League, Paraclete plays at Riverside Notre Dame on Tuesday.
According to the Southern Section press release, all games will start at 7 p.m. unless both teams agree on an alternate time.
