Soldier named as Woman of Year
Reservist Miller recently returned from duty in Iraq
LANCASTER -- A 20-year-old Lancaster college student recently returned from Army duty in Iraq was honored by state Sen. George Runner as the Woman of the Year for Senate District 17.
Sarah Joy Miller is a reservist with the Army National Guard and returned this February from a year in Taji, a city outside Baghdad, with the Fresno-based 1072nd Transportation Company.
"It's a great honor to recognize such a humble person who demonstrates such a strong commitment to service that she set aside her own goals and freedoms for us and the rest of the world," Runner said.
Miller was recognized with other lawmakers' Woman of the Year honorees at a Sacramento ceremony.
First lady Maria Shriver, in her address to the state Senate recognizing the Women of the Year, highlighted Miller as an exemplary California woman.
Shriver later asked Miller to join her at a meeting with three other military families to discuss ways the state can help soldiers and their families when they return from overseas duty.
Miller, a Desert Christian High School graduate, will continue her studies at the University of LaVerne and is interested in pursuing a law career.
Miller's photo will be displayed with those of the other Women of the Year in an exhibit titled "Serving California: 2005 Woman of the Year Honorees" at the California Museum for History, Women and the Arts. The exhibit featuring the stories of the 120 women honored by the state Legislature will be on display through April 30 and become a permanent part of California's archive
